Abstract :
ScottishPower is one of Scotland´s largest industrial companies, employing around 14400 people and reporting an annual turnover of almost £3 billion. The Company was formed in 1990 from the previously nationalised South of Scotland Electricity Board, and was one of only two vertically integrated electricity companies, generating, transmitting, distributing and supplying electricity in the UK. At that time, it served 1.8 million electricity customers in the south of Scotland. Today, the Company has diversified into other utility markets such as water, and waste water services, gas and telecommunications, and now serves 1 in 5 of all UK homes with one or more ScottishPower Services, across 3 varied and important geographical areas. This paper seeks to show how the management of business change has played a key role in the growth of the Company, and to indicate the role played by both internal and external benchmarking in establishing and realising the vision of the shape of the Company
