Abstract :
The reduction and elimination of waste is essential to maintain the quality of the Earth´s environment and achieve global sustainable development. This paper analyzes the current conditions of solid wastes (SW) into the sustainable development context and establishes priority actions to the problem. The traditional techniques to reduce the SW change how the products are manufactured but do any of them ask why they are produced? As an answer to this problem, the question of source reduction arises. This approach prevents waste before products are used and before they are produced. Based on this situation, changing unsustainable partners of production and consumption is suggested. It is also essential in integrated management that development is reconciled with environmental problems. Finally, marketing, quality total management and technological and environmental management must reconcile their development in a sustainable design
