Abstract
This paper deals with the application of advanced control techniques to improve the product quality in hot rolling mills. Performance improvements are obtained by modifying the controller structure. A combined control of the upper and lower servo-drive reduces the speed fluctuations; torsional oscillations can almost be eliminated by adding a disturbance observer. Extensive computer simulations show the obtainable improvements and allow an easy design of the controller
