Abstract :
A novel congestion control mechanism is proposed for a system consisting of a high-speed backbone network connecting low-speed LANs (local area networks). The main goal has been to define a fair and simple congestion control mechanism. A performance study of this control mechanism is carried out. The authors are mainly interested in evaluating the packet loss probability and delay as a function of the offered load. This mechanism is suitable for use in an environment requiring one to control the amount of traffic generated by a specific source LAN. This aspect has been demonstrated by the fact that the mechanism directly penalizes the traffic which is increasingly requesting more bandwidth, leading to a fair and independent control for other traffic
