Abstract
In this paper, the near maximum likelihood detection algorithm is presented for symbol detection of the Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evaluation (EDGE) cellular system, in which eight phase shift keying (8-PSK) modulation is employed. The selection of the detected symbol in the near maximum detection algorithm is achieved through the use of simple threshold-level comparisons and does not involve the computation of any cost like the viterbi algorithm, also the number of calculated metrics is small, that makes it simpler than the viterbi algorithm and needs very little computational operations. This method can be easily implemented into commercial signal processors because of its simplicity. Simulation results comparing this method with the Reduced State Sequence Estimation (RSSE) and Decision feedback sequence estimation (DFSE) methods with set partitioning are presented.
