Abstract
A general, simple expression for the improvement factor is derived, and some numerical examples are presented for a given set of FEC codes. It is shown that BCH (n, k) codes can provide up to 50% capacity improvement if quite a long code, e.g., (511,259), is used for error rate 10-3. At the same bit error rate level, convolutional codes with Rc = 1/3 and constant length K = 8 can provide up to 175% capacity improvement. The analysis includes a system with voice activity monitoring
