Abstract :
A novel compact coupled planar resonator (CCPR) based VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) was developed in response to expensive high Q resonator (ceramic, SAW and dielectric resonators) based signal sources. One of the problem related to the conventional ceramic/SAW/DR based resonator is integration in IC (integrated chip) form. The measured phase noise for a carrier frequency 4.2 GHz CCPR VCO is better than -118 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset. The CCPR VCO topology is not limited to this frequency, can be extended for other higher frequency by incorporating mode-injection stubs across the CCPR to obtain desired operating frequency.
