Abstract
The ultra wide band (UWB) technology is a recent approach for wireless networks with intended applications ranging from wireless sensor networks to high data-rate services. The WiMedia standard provides an elaborate physical and MAC (media access control) layer for UWB. The MAC is based on a distributed beaconing mechanism mandatory for all devices. This beaconing has a fix upper limit for the number of nodes simultaneously within a two-hop distance. In this work we analyze the beacon slot reservation algorithm for its limits in scalability. A worst case situation exists that could place strict limitations to node density. The beacon slot reservation algorithm was simulated and the performance evaluated.
