Abstract :
In this paper, a novel 2-D PBG (photonic band-gap) structure is proposed which we call Intercrossed Capacitor Coupled Patch and Via PBG (ICCPVPBG) structure. In this new structure, the metal squares of the Gap-Coupled PVPBG (GCPVPBG) are replaced by the intercrossed capacitors which have a larger capacitance. Simulation and experimental results show that the ICCPVPBG has a band-gap with a center frequency 800 MHz lower than the GCPVPBG with the same size. If we want to gain band-gap with the same center frequency, the periodicity of the ICCPVPBG is only 3/4 of that of the GCPVPBG structure. When we use the ICCPVPBG structure as the ground plane of a horizontal monopole, the front radiation is increased by 11 dB compared with the horizontal monopole having a metal ground plane. The horizontal monopole is only 0.012λ0 (1 mm) from the ICCPVPBG ground plane.
