Abstract :
In the area of wireless ad hoc networks, efficient resource allocation with using hierarchal routing protocols is a very important research issue. A number of hierarchal-based routing algorithms have been proposed, mostly based on a layered design approach, which means that they are focused on designing optimal strategies for "single" layer only. In this paper, we take an alternative approach i.e., a cross-layer design, and present a new clustering-based routing protocol named cross-CBRP. In this new approach, the interactions between physical, MAC and routing layers are fully exploited to better adapt the clustering algorithm to varying link and network condition due to mobility. More precisely, in the proposed cross-CBRP algorithm, signal power information at the physical layer is utilized for the routing layer such that it can maximize the stability of the formed clusters. Through simulation study using the NS-2, we evaluate the performance of the presented cross-CBRP and demonstrate its substantial performance gains.
