Title :
A Trial Application of Optical Transducers for Protective Relaying
fDate :

Abstract :
This paper summarizes a panel session presentation on the findings of a trial application of optical transducers for protection use. The trial application was on a 230 kV bus connection to a combined shunt reactor and shunt capacitor position. The intent of the application was to examine the performance of the transducers in the presence of non fundamental frequency signals and while connected to protective relays. The findings indicate the transducers performed as expected except in the case of sustained DC voltage. However it was also discovered that the performance of the analog inputs of the protective relays were also relevant to the overall performance of the system
