Abstract

For Romania, a New Member State of European Union, it is imperative to develop a mechanism to lead the country toward a knowledge based economy. The use of IT tools by Romanian companies, and especially SMEs - the most important category as percentage in GDP contribution, number and employment - is an important starting point for decision makers in this direction. In this paper, we present the results of a research conducted on a sample of 1256 SMEs - micro, small and medium sized enterprises - operating in all economic sectors, covering every age category and each of the eight development regions, being considered as representative for the goals of the research and for the Romanian SMEs´ situation.
