Abstract
An analytical model describing the impact of cross phase modulation on WDM communication systems is presented. We evaluate the eye closure penalty resulting from cross phase modulation and derive its dependence on the optical power and the wavelength separation between channels. In the cases studied, conventional fiber systems show smaller impairments than systems using non zero dispersion shifted fiber
