  • Abstract
Synchrophasors (Synchronized phasor measurements) provide a new method for enhanced visualization of system conditions and can lead to new kinds of adaptive Wide-Area protection, emergency control, and optimization systems. Through the use of synchrophasors, simple values such as voltage angles, line flows, and breaker statuses, can be viewed in real time rather than delayed by scan rates and calculations. Advanced quantities, such as oscillatory modes, damping ratios, and local time errors, can be calculated and displayed in order to be used by operators. The introduction of synchronized phasor measurements in protection, control, and automation devices has greatly improved the observability of power system dynamics.
