Abstract :
When applying ultrasonic tissue characterization to diagnosis of myocardial diseases one must consider the anisotropic characteristics of the myocardium. In the present work, the authors investigated the influence of the orientation of myocardial fibers on the attenuation characteristics of tissues, with the basic experiment using pig myocardium. Some results showed that the value of the attenuation coefficient was greater when the ultrasound beam was directed parallel to the muscle fibers than when it was directed perpendicular to them
