Abstract :
Cellular automata are successfully used in image processing including image denoising, edge detection and segmentation. In this paper, their potential within image interpolation and image compression is investigated. Since the human visual system is highly sensitive to edges, an edge-based compression scheme can produce intelligible images at high compression ratios. From a physical point of view, taking the pixel values of an image as the temperature of some plane object, a cellular automaton (CA) is applied to model image reconstruction. Experiments show that this technique has proved to be very efficient for the coding of the smooth texture component in high compression applications using closed lines for the initial set.
