Abstract
User authentication plays a central role among the security features of mobile radio systems. Nowadays, with many new network operators, the authentication of the network operator has also gained in importance. The paper describes in detail new authentication schemes for third generation mobile radio systems which are currently being discussed in Europe. Their key security features are summarized and the schemes are compared by means of a catalogue of assessment criteria, including an estimation of the computational complexity of the schemes
