Abstract :
This paper examines the hysteresis margin (Δ) as a way of avoiding the `ping-pong´ effect when making hard handovers, and limiting the number of transceivers per base station (BS) when making soft handovers. Perfect power control is assumed and some parameters with direct consequences on the capacity of the system are calculated anew, such as the power margin needed to guarantee as many as 10% of mobiles out of coverage, the overlapping achieved or the mean number of transceivers per BS needed. It is shown that both hard and soft solutions need the same power margin
