Abstract :
The authors analyze the performance of a multicarrier modulation system with signal transmission during a guard period. They derive the bit error rate (BER) performance of the multicarrier modulation system under time and frequency selective fading environments. The relations between irreducible BER performance and the number of subchannels are shown. Next, they propose a subchannel assignment protocol that provides a variable-bit-rate transmission capability. This protocol provides better packet loss probability and throughput performance than the conventional frequency division multiple access (FDMA) protocol
