Abstract :
The combination of dispersion management and the nature of soliton transmission is very promising for high speed long distance optical communication systems required for future growth in existing optical networks. This paper presents an overview of dispersion-managed soliton fundamentals and addresses issues relevant to the use of dispersion-managed solitons for terrestrial upgrade applications. Dispersion-managed solitons differ from traditional uniform dispersion solitons in the sense that they undergo periodic pulse broadening and compression during propagation within the dispersion map
