Title :
Cooperative autonomous behavior of aggregate units over large scale terrain

Abstract :
Experiences with an object-oriented simulation system, the RAND Integrated Simulation Environment (RISE) and two projects, the Advanced Geographic Experiments project (AGE) and the Surveillance Systems Analysis model (SUSAN), are described. The system incorporates digital terrain, roads, railroads, rivers, conceptual terrain entities, autonomously behaving objects, computer graphics and animation, interactive user interfaces and multiprocessing. The author emphasizes autonomous behavior over complex scripts generated by human players, thus greatly shortening the scenario preparation time required of other such models. The system emphasizes portability and speed and exhibits significant scale-up capabilities-tens of thousands of objects rather than hundreds
