Abstract :
State estimation techniques are used as it is infeasible to monitor completely the whole electrical network. However with strategically placed measurements, estimation techniques can determine the parameters at unmonitored locations. Fundamental frequency state estimation is now a standard tool in modern power systems. Estimation techniques have been extended to Harmonic State Estimation (HSE) and this paper further extends the estimation techniques to Transient State Estimation (TSE). This technique is capable of estimating the complete system state using partial measurements and hence giving information on the fault location. It partitions the system nodes according to the type of branches that are connected to them. The algorithm is presented, which uses an efficient formulation of the network equations via a diakoptical segregation methodology, and demonstrated on the Lower South Island of the New Zealand test system.
