Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious endocrine disorder disease affecting the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein. In recent years, the incidence of DM has increased worldwide, especially in developed countries. Two main classes of medicines, oral hypoglycemic drugs (OHD) and hypoglycemic active elements from plants (HAEPs), are used to treat DM by reducing blood sugar levels. OHDs can be classed based on their chemical structures as sulfonylurea compounds, biguanide compounds, α-glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolinediones and repaglindes. HAEPs can also be classed based on their chemical structure as polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, peptides, sulfuryl containing compounds, steroids and unsaturated fatty acids. This paper reviews the uses of OHDs and HAEPs for the treatment of DM.
