Abstract
A model factory provides an unique training facility for students interested in data communication as well as those interested in manufacturing. A programmable logic controller (PLC) together with its ladder logic is used to control the model factory. The PLC is interfaced to the manufacturing automation protocol (MAP) network. Communication with the factory is established with other nodes on the MAP network. The overall system, the factory model, the PLC and its MAP interface are used to study the computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) theories to implement scheduling algorithms and to gain first hand experience in setting up and operation of a production facility
