Abstract
This paper discusses why the complexity of today´s navigation systems requires an integrated-systems-engineering approach, and why prototyping is considered an essential element of the research into navigation systems. It shows how the need for an integrated systems approach determines the research roadmap used by the radionavigation group of Delft University of Technology. Some examples, in which the concept of commercial technology insertion has been used extensively in the realization of prototypes, are discussed
