Team-based design: Collaborative learning across time and space

Rapid advances in mobile computing and wireless communication present an opportunity for fundamental changes in engineering education, particularly for team based courses in which collaborative learning is the dominant learning mode. Through an iterative, bootstrapping approach, we study how students use computer-based collaboration tools to design a next generation of collaboration tools. Our suite of collaboration tools is called Handy Andy, which is based on the Andrew wireless network at Carnegie Mellon. Our goal is to facilitate computer-based collaborative learning in project-based design courses by developing collaboration tools for mobile computers.
