Abstract :
A new defect-detecting method based on a pressure wave propagation (PWP) method was developed. This is the first report on successful application of this method to detect a foreign material and space charges in a XLPE cable. Applying this method to detect the foreign material in an artificial 22 kV XLPE (crosslinked polyethylene) cable, we found out that space charges were accumulated on the surface of the foreign material. We also applied this method to a sheathed cable with surface charges accumulated in it, and we successfully detected the surface charges
