Abstract
This paper deals with the nonlinear optical behaviour of 1550 nm vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs). Recent progress in studies of nonlinear gain, optical bistability and two-wavelength switching is reviewed. Functionality in the parameter space of optical power, frequency and polarisation is demonstrated experimentally and confirmed by theoretical calculations. Potential applications are foreseen in all- optical signal processing and optical switching/routing.
