Abstract :
A realization of an adaptive shaper (burst spacer) that can enforce effective rates on ATM traffic streams is presented. The underlying theory utilizes traffic models with only burst level statistics, which exploit the buffering gain that is potentially available in the asymptotic regime (i.e. through using large buffers). The proposed realization offers the flexibility of adapting to network resource availability and/or source nonstationarities, maintaining however specific QoS figures (delay percentiles). Thus it is particularly suitable for ATM services of the ABR type
