Abstract
Multimedia contents on the Internet have increased significantly since last couple of years. Most of the existing scalable multi-rate multicast techniques adapt discrete layering strategy. Scalable video encoders generally performs frame rate and resolution quality adaptation. Each receiver joins or leaves additional layers according to the required quality. As each layer is transmitted on a separate multicast group, existing techniques offer group join/leave delay, degradation in QoS, roughness and disruption in user experience. In this paper, we present an overview of multi-rate multicast congestion control techniques and their shortcomings. We propose a single rate technique for adaptive multicast, based on packet trimming concept, according to the requirements of downstream users. The simulation comparison of the proposed scheme with static layering shows promising improvement in terms of user experience as well as network efficiency.
