            Abstract : 
In this article optical models in lightwave links, which include a LD (laser diode) source, a single-mode fiber and a p-i-n photodiode receiver model, are simulated and investigated using SPW (signal processing worksystem) on a HP workstation. Simulation methods are presented concerning the optical source waveforms, fiber attenuation and dispersion, and receiver noise. The end-to-end performance of typical transmission system is also presented. SPW software and its usage on a HP workstation are introduced
