Abstract :
The different approaches to artificial intelligence in Japan and the United States, as connected with the national characters of these two countries, are examined. The state of the art of information processing in Japan is reviewed, with attention given to character recognition, picture and image processing, robot vision, speech recognition and synthesis, machine translation, and speech translation. Research themes for the development of an automatic speech translation telephone system are considered
