Abstract :
The use of high voltage triggered vacuum switches (TVS) in a crowbar system for the load protection is described. TVSs can most sufficiently satisfy the main switch demands in a crowbar. New generation of compact TVSs with up to 500 kA and 50 kV switching current and voltage is presented. Two ways of increasing the hold off voltage is studied: one-gap device construction and connection of tubes in series. New effective methods of several sequentially connected TVS operation is discussed. Dependent triggering is used but time delay does not exceed two switching-on time. Applied voltage polarity does not matter. The design and test results of 80 kV and 130 kV crowbar systems based on two and three series TVS are presented. To simplify the crowbar utilization the system is supplied with current sensor and triggering unit.
