Abstract :
The technical norm for surge arresters is nowadays the gapless metal oxide (MO) surge arrester. By manufacturing MO resistors with excellent long-term stability, with dimensions adopted to the energy requirements of the different system voltages, optimised designs for GIS surge arresters are available. The main advantages of GIS surge arresters compared with air insulated designs are their excellent behaviour under pollution conditions, their very high availability and their possibility to be integrated into SF6 substations for optimised equipment protection. However, air insulated designs (AIS) are for the time being more economic and may offer optimum solutions at GIS terminations
