Abstract :
Numerical control (NC) metal mold processing is discussed, and an algorithm for determining a cutter path which is based upon a numerical model given by scanning a profiling model is proposed. The method gives a cutter path for rough cutting to avoid tool interference when a ball mill is used as a cutting tool. In this method, knots of a given numerical model are linearly connected so that triangles can be shaped, and calculations to avoid tool interference are carried out with respect to each triangle. Since the algorithm can be applied to any free-formed surface, the data from computer-aided design systems can be used as well as those from the profiling model
