Based on a hydrogeological survey, a total of 92 wells were settled, nitrite nitrogen (NO3--N) is the main contaminant of groundwater in new lakeshore district (NLD) of Hefei city. Multivariate statistical method factor analysis (performed using SPSS 13.0) was used to analyze the NO3--N characteristics and related factors. A three-factor model was suggested and explained 74.3% of the total related groundwater quality variation. Factor 1 includes Ca2+, Mg2+, Factor 2 includes Na and Factor 3 includes NH4+ and NO2-. The result indicates that Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, NH4+ and NO2- have positive effect on the nitrate pollution in the study area, pH and HCO3- have negative effect on the nitrate pollution.
