Since the sediment cores record the history of regional pollution, they are of great significance for studying regional environment evolution and promoting environmental management. The sedimentary record of heavy metals in Foshan Waterway was investigated by the analysis of the sediment cores. The sedimentary rates, measured by the 210Pb dating method, range from 4.487 5.177 cm · a-1, and the sedimentation is inferred to occur in the last 16-22 years. Compared with the registered discharge of heavy metals, the relationship was established between the sedimentary record (based on the sedimentary age) and the registered discharge. It was found that abnormal discharges of Cd took place in certain section of the waterway from 1992 to 1993. This research indicates that the sedimentary record will help make up for the insufficiency of registered discharges, and improve the capability of environmental management.
