Abstract
The authors propose a methodology for a simple regulator development process adapted to some complex control problems where only an approximate solution could be known. They consider the application of the methodology to systems where the complexity of the control problem raises difficulties concerning the search for a complete analytical solution, but where an approximate performance can be described by space phase trajectories. As an application example, a suboptimal solution to the time and stator losses optimization problem applied to the position control system of a permanent magnet motor is presented. The trajectory tracking is assured by a combination of a sliding mode and a PI (proportional plus integral) regulator
