The purposes of our study focus on the fate and transport of petroleum pollutants in the river, and effects of suspended substances (SS) on the change of group composition. The water samples were collected along the river which received the effluent discharged from the oil wastewater treatment plant located in Liaohe Oilfield. Saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and polar compounds after trichloromethane extraction were isolated by the silica-alumina columns. The concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) decreased along the river (from 12.1 mg L-1 to 7.3 mg L-1). There are significant differences between the proportional changes of group composition of petroleum hydrocarbons. Corresponding to the increase of proportion of saturated hydrocarbons, proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons shows the decline. Additionally, there are appreciable different partition coefficients between different group compositions of petroleum pollutants. As the increase of residence time, partition coefficient of saturated hydrocarbons increases and aromatic hydrocarbons decreases. The results are suggested that sorption and deposit are the major factors influencing on the fate of petroleum pollutants in the winner. More toxic compounds were removed from the water column, and pollutants become less harmful for the downstream water environment.
