Abstract :
The performance and design of an electronically phased array developed for the mobile satellite experiment program (MSAT-X) are briefly described. The array uses cavity-backed printed cross-slot array elements. The cross-slot was chosen as the radiating element because it has a low profile, very wide space angular coverage, low cost, and broad frequency coverage (1545 MHz to 1660 MHz). The beamformer consists of 19-way radial unequal power divider and eighteen 3-b diode phase shifters. The major features of the antenna system are its low profile (total array thickness of the breadboard including beamformer and supporting structure is 0.68 inches), low elevation angular coverage, and fast acquisition and tracking performance, even under fading conditions.<>
