A study was carried out in Hua County of Henan Province to study the effects of straw returning on soil nitrate content in a winter wheat-summer maize double cropping system. The results showed that straw returning decreased nitrate content in the 0-200 cm soil profile. Soil nitrate content in 90.0 kg/hm2 in 0-100cm soil horizon straw returning plus N fertilizer (at a rate of 90.0 kg/hm2) after the wheat harvest, closing to the European Union standard. Straw returning also decreased the amount of residue nitrate in the 0-200 cm soil layer after wheat harvest. We conclude that straw returning decreases nitrate accumulation in soil and has on the potential to protecting groundwater from nitrate pollution.
