Abstract :
Fast resource management (FRM) is a traffic control function which will be used for short-term bandwidth management in ATM networks. It aims at the minimisation of the time required to reserve the necessary resources before allowing a connection to exploit them. Two different approaches, the FRM with immediate transmission and the FRM with delayed transmission are described and their performance is evaluated through comparative simulation study. The immediate transmission is in all cases superior, especially in the presence of increased round-trip delay. The usage of the FRM, as imposed by the end users´, the applications´ and the telecom operators´ requirements, are also discussed
