Total and methyl mercury in water and sediment collected from Wuli River, which was past polluted by the Chlor alkali industry in Huludao city, had been investigated to reveal mercury varieties during the past 25 years. Results showed that total and methyl mercury in water were both in decreasing, and the most decrease was from 1998 when the pollution source was cut off. From the upstream to the downstream, total mercury in water was in decreasing but methyl mercury was increasing; total and methyl mercury in sediment were both in decreasing on the whole. In sediment of several representational sites, total mercury was increasing from the surface to the deep layer and methyl mercury mostly accumulated on the surface.
