The paper describes an eco-campus initiative being undertaken at Nanchang University (NCU) in Nanchang City, China. The amount of resources, especially stormwater, utilization and waste generation at the campus would be quite considerable. The overall goal of the initiative is twofold: to develop a sustainable water management strategy for the new NCU Qien-Hu campus, and to use the campus and its physical facilities as a tool for promoting environmental learning and to serve as a "living laboratory" for faculty and students engaging in water/environmental research. The elements of the eco-campus initiative include the establishment of a working group involving both faculty and students; the development of an implementation plan, and the execution of a pilot study to demonstrate the benefit and feasibility for campus-wide implementation. The present paper reports the progress of such a pilot study, which aims at testing a number of "low impact development" or LID types of best management practices (BMPs) designed for controlling stormwater-induced pollution entering the water bodies on and near the NCU campus.
