To get a better understanding of the situation of drinking water quality in Nanchang in 2009 and to provide scientific evidence to health administrative department to make some measures for improving drinking water supply, The survey was conducted in rural and urban Nanchang in 2009. Rural drinking water samples (including non-central water supply and small central water supply) were collected during March to April (dry season) and July to August (wet season), respectively. Urban drinking water samples were collected from extremity of centralized pipe network monthly. All the samples were detected, evaluated and analyzed according to the GB 5749-2006 and GB/T 5750-2006. The main failure rates for drinking water quality were 5.72 % for turbidity, 6.58 % for pH, 3.15 % for manganese (Mn), 34.19 % for total coliform, 8.44 % for bacteria count, 28.76 % for thermotolerant coliform. Failure rate in pH, manganese, total coliform, bacterial count, thermotolerant coliform of rural drinking water is higher than urban areas(p<;0.05). The drinking water quality in Nanchang is still poor, the improvement is desiderated. The main reason of substandard quality of drinking water is that the disinfection was not carried out effectively. Therefore, it is important to reinforce management and disinfection for drinking water.
