An ensemble of physico-chemical parameters was investigated to assess the quality of Poyang Lake. The parameters investigated include pH; electrical conductivity, EC; total dissolved solid, TDS; dissolved oxygen, DO; Eh; and nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, sulfate, and phosphate concentrations. Also monitored were the concentrations of sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, bicarbonate. The results showed that sodium is the major cation and bicarbonate is the major anions in the water. As a result of this, the type of the hydrochemistry is Na-HCO3, which is different from that of the hydrochemistry of the water (Ca-HCO3) collected in 1990s. Nitrate nitrogen dominated in the forms of nitrogen in Poyang Lake, most of those came from Ganjiang River water. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous are highest at upstream, and were lowest at midstream. Water at upstream is mainly affected from its tributaries of the Raohe River and Ganjiang River, mainly by the human activities at downstream.
