Lake Tai is the third largest freshwater lake in China with annual cyanobacteria blooms. Microcystins produced by these blooming cyanobacteria species have both acute and chronic hepatotoxic effects on animals and humans in the resin. This paper determined the concentrations of extracellular MCs-LR in 12 typical areas around Lake Tai and 29 sites in Jiaxing River net water of Lake Tai downriver by Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) during the period of Mar. 2008 to Feb. 2009. The results showed the MC-LR concentration in each sampling site was relatively higher in Aug. and Oct. than other months in 2008 and the highest concentration was 0.66 μg L-1 in typical areas around Lake Tai exception for MC-LR undetected during the period of Dec.2008 to Feb.2009. The results not only revealed the applicability of ELISA by comparison with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) but also offered scientific evidence for environmental assessment about circumjacent typical areas effect on Lake Tai.
