Abstract :
It is pointed out that AC variable-speed drives are seeing more widespread use in the pulp and paper industry. This is due to the reliability and low cost of the AC induction motor, combined with the recently improved economy and performance of AC drives. It is noted that, even though the up-front cost of an AC drive control, is greater than that of the DC drive, there are many factors to consider that can quickly make up the difference. Conservative data are presented which indicate a 17% savings as a percentage of total system and installation cost using AC drives. Some end users have experienced up to 30% savings.<>
