Angle of arrival estimation of coherent signals using a shifted array correlation technique

Abstract :
Shifted array correlation (SAC) correlates M shifted array vectors with testing vectors to solve for M angles-of-arrival. In special cases and at high array signal-to-noise ratios (ASNRs), the resolution patterns generated by SAC are simply related to spatial smoothing patterns. Computer simulation results are presented to show some of the performance characteristics of the SAC technique as applied to the two wavefront problem. Numerical analysis of the two wavefront-signal case predicts the experimental difficulty of resolving two closely spaced coherent signals. Narrow spacings, on the order of 0.1 beamwidths, require ASNRs in excess of 50 dB.<>
