Abstract :
In the paper ´Nuggets of Knowledge´, presented at the May, 1976, IEEE Pulp and Paper Industry Technical Conference, W.C. Bloomquist and E. J. Kayfes presented an array of power distribution topics selected through a poll of various committees. In the present work, the author provides further background on some of the topics, updates others, and introduces some new ones. The following topics are covered: (1) MVA fault calculation method; (2) rule-of-thumb for motor starting voltage drop; (3) rule-of-thumb for voltage change due to switching capacitors; (4) need for regulator to control VArs in a utility tie; (5) rule-of-thumb for amount of capacitance to connect to an induction motor; (6) Is a higher system voltage economical for mills?; (7) ´new´ rules in selecting voltage ratings of power cables; (8) bifurcation; (9) low resistance grounding of a delta connected power system; (10) selection of synchronous chipper transformers based on impact loading considerations; and, (11) transformer protection update.<>
